The Music department at Hills Road Sixth Form College has been busy preparing for a major choral and orchestral concert, which was held at Ely Cathedral on Wednesday 26th April.
Former Music student, Alex Woolf was commissioned to compose a piece specially in honour of Linda Sinclair, the recently retired Principal of Hills Road Sixth Form College.
Alex said, “It’s a huge privilege to be asked to mark this occasion with new music; Linda was Principal throughout my time at Hills, and like so many students past and present I feel incredibly lucky to have been at such a fantastic College under her leadership.”
The specially commissioned piece was kept a closely guarded secret so as to be a complete surprise for Linda Sinclair when she attended the concert.
Kate Murdoch, Director of Music at the College said, “We were delighted when Alex accepted the commission to compose a work to mark Linda’s retirement and it is a very fitting tribute to Linda’s wonderful support for the College’s Music Department.”
“We’ve had the pleasure of performing Alex’s music before, including on a concert tour to Venice and Verona and we’re particularly pleased that Alex conducted the performance in spite of his demanding schedule as a postgraduate Composition student at the Royal Academy of Music.”
The concert also featured the College’s Symphony Orchestra playing movements from Dvorak's ever popular 9th Symphony as well as items from Wind Orchestra and Chamber Choir.
The programme included:
Woolf: Inward Light - A specially commissioned work by former student Alex Woolf
Dvorak: 'New World' Symphony No 9- [2nd & 4th movements]
Sparke: Hanover Overture
Lauridsen: Lux Aeterna - [movements from]
Performances from: Symphony Orchestra; Wind Orchestra; College Choir and Chamber Orchestra; Chamber Choir.
